Botulinum Toxins

BOTOX ® /MYOBLOC ® /PHENOL

Read all about it! There are many articles and studies referencing the first two of the above. They represent two of the seven strains of botulinum toxin that are very effective in the treatment of Spasmodic Torticollis. It is labeled as the treatment of choice by the American Medical Association (AMA). When given as injections the procedure is termed chemo (chemical) denervation. Denervation meaning loss of nerve supply.

Allergan Pharmaceutical is the maker of strain A or Botox ® and Solstice Pharmaceutical is the maker of strain B or Myobloc ® . You will be hearing of another toxin coming into the marketplace called Dysport ® which is presently being tested in the USA and used in Europe.

Great care should be taken with either of these toxins and, although some doctors may say different, it is our belief that you should not receive more than 200-300 units (max) of Botox ® and approximately 10,000 - 15,000 mg. of Myobloc ® . On very rare occasions and depending on the make-up of a person, extra amounts may be tried BUT BEWARE. Also, booster-type of injections are to be avoided - boosters meaning to have further injections within 30-45 days after your regular one. Too much and too often will possibly create antibodies.

Phenol is very rarely used and should be used only (or, rather tried) if you have not had success with either toxin and then it should only be given by a competent doctor - and there are very, very few who understand both phenol and ST. Please read the article.

Good luck to you!
