SONDRA DAVIS
TAI CHI MEDALIST
In 1983 I was diagnosed with ST. At that time I was an avid racquetball player. The racquetball days soon came to an end because of pain and my inability to play anymore. I really began to miss the sport and the relationships I had made. I wanted to stay active, athletically and socially, but I didn't know what sport or activity I could engage in with my ST condition.
Years later my Mom suggested we try a Tai Chi class. Tai Chi is a form of very slow martial arts. It can improve balance, flexibility, and strength as well as undo tension, release fear and anxiety. I realized I could do this with ST. It was low impact but very beneficial physically and mentally.
Six years ago I was invited to observe a Martial Arts Competition. Rather than observe I decided to compete. Although I didn't win a medal, I found the experience exhilarating and continued to compete every year. I now have 3 gold medals, one silver, and a bronze. I give credit for my accomplishments to many of my Tai Chi friends but mostly to my teacher, Master Tony Yang.
Tai Chi may not be for everyone but it has been very rewarding for me in so many ways.
